From beginning to end, handpainted tiles are just that! Each tile begins blank. An idea. A drawing or pattern is created and then transferred to the tile. Usually the image is then outlined by brush and painted with layers of glazes. Each layer dries before the next can be applied. I often shade an image by layering different colored glazes on top of each other. This gives a richness and dimensional quality to the images. The layering technique can be tricky because certain chemicals that make up the different colors can react to one another while melting and fusing together in the firing process. So I often do tests to see what the result will be. The tiles are fired in a kiln once I feel the layering and shading is built up enough to give me the look I want. For a watercolor wash type look the layering is lighter, while the solid block colors require layers that are consistent and thick enough for for complete coverage. Each project requires planning and thought for which glazing technique will work best. While in the kiln the glazes melt and fuse together and to the manufactured tiles glaze. The kiln fires for approximately 6 to 8 hours and reaches temperatures close to 1850 degrees. Most kitchens and bathrooms are tiled with talc body tiles. They are quite durable as countertops, backsplashes, and shower/tub enclosures; however, they remain somewhat porous and are not recommend for outdoor applications where temperatures drop below freezing. They can absorb moisture which expands when frozen and can cause cracking. Porcelain base tiles are recommend for outdoor applications such as bar-b-que counter area, pools, spas, and signage, where temperatures drop below freezing. Porcelain body tiles are fired higher and clay particles vitrify making them non-porous. They tend to be more expensive than the talc body, but are well worth the investment for beautifying your outdoor living areas! Due to the nature of handpainted tiles and the glaze layering, duplication of images shown on the following pages will have slight variations if re-ordered. If you see a pattern and you like the style, but the color palette is wrong, we can adjust that. If a design is predominantly earthtones and you want oceany blues - a new color palette can applied...the options are unlimited! As you journey through this web site, please keep in mind that you are seeing only a fraction of what can be created for you on tile. Art on tile can enhance your home, workspace, and recreational areas of your life. The scope of my creative artistry is bound only by the imagination... let the process begin! |
